Should I give up on "being yourself"

Post Body

Ever since I was in junior high I've had this mentally that I should just be myself to show people I'm not afraid to be open, I also did it so show girls who am. As time went by I continued this mentality and made up a quote to go with it, "if your not yourself ,then who are you?" , I never once believed that I was wrong because I've always heard or was told that being yourself was always something best when you want to date someone. Years later after high school and working for 5 years, I'm still single, became depressed, and rethinking on wether or not my mentality has caused me to be like this.

Can I get some advice or opinions?
