Does anyone else work as a big data professional in a [seemingly] unorthodox way?

Post Body

I started a new role where my official title is a data analyst, but so far it’s been a ton of shell scripting, developing Unix-based tools to automate data retrieval processing, and fixing errors in fields. It’s a weird transition to only view data frames in a terminal, and only write code in a vim editor in a terminal, but I’ve gotten used to it and enjoy it thus far. I’ve also talked with a colleague about implementing some ML algorithms to help the team in the future. So far, no model building, no data visualization, and very limited use of tools and packages like pandas. How common are tools like this in the DS world?
