USB flash drive appears then disappears again

I recently posted on r/techsupport about a 5-year-old post that describes my current problem exactly.

In a nutshell: When I plug in my USB drive (generic 16GB) it appears for a brief moment and then disappears again (over and over again). On AOMEI Partition Manager it sees the drive but it says that it is unformatted.

The drive belongs to my grandparents and they do not have any backup for their pictures. So any help would be greatly appreciated. If I cant do it on my own, do you think a pro would be able to recover the files?
