the majority of these “life expectancies” are just showing how long they could expect to live in ideal circumstances.
but for some insects, it’s really hard to give a clear number. the vast majority of dragonflies, for example, die through predators.

that really surprised me as well! in perfect conditions, they can even go as long as 8 years
