Magic adjustment vs. Parameter bonus

Alright, I've been playing Dark Souls since the 360, I've got remastered and have figured out almost everything to the game, all the secrets, questlines, et cetera. But the ONE thing I just don't understand, infuriatingly enough, is the concept of magic adjustment.
Does it just combine with my intelligence/faith bonus? Are they completely separate from each other? I feel dumb for asking, with having 100 percented the trophies on ps4, but I simply cannot figure it out. Any help?
