I've just finished playing Elden Ring and I decided to go back and play DS1 for the first time. I've had fun with the game so far but cannot for the life of me get either Ornstein or Smough down to even half health. I've constantly seen people criticising Godskin Duo from Elden Ring and saying how O&S is the gold standard for duos, but I'm having similar problems here as I had with that fight.
If I focus on Smough then Ornstein will either continually jab at me through him or I'll miss the wind up animation on he unblockable glide of death as he's concealed behind the big boi. If I focus on Ornstein then Smough is always no more than about 2 seconds away from flattening my ass, usually from off camera as Ornstein tends to hop around and break my line of sight on both of them, so I only ever manage to get 1 or 2 hits in at a time before having to sprint across the arena and repeat the process.
Am I missing some obvious strategy here? I've tried using the pillars to separate them but that only seems to buy me an extra second or two. After all the talk about how this is such a fun, fair boss encounter it seems to me at the moment it suffers from exactly the same issues that always screw me over in duo fights.
Summoning either Solaire or an online player is a must. Defeating the giants in the area beforehand so that solaire is not damaged before the fight is crucial. They're tough, but run under their legs or just try to run around them. As for the actual fight, both of the bosses have some pretty straightforward linear attacks that are fairly easy to predict. One quirk for the executioner is that if you stay really close to him, he sometimes can't hit you because his hammer starts hitting at mid range. Sometimes you'll be lucky enough to just get up in their face and do some damage and sometimes this will even stagger them. Solaire will be totally important for getting the aggro off of you. But he will most likely eventually perish in this brutal boss fight. Make sure all your armor is as upgraded as it can be, along with upgraded estus flask and some good rings. There's not much "fair" about this battle other than the fact that everyone moves kinda slow. It's harder than the final boss, imo.
