What happens to the Chosen Undead after they've linked the fire?

Gwyn had a powerful soul and turned hollow and had to be fought and killed to re-link the flame. Wouldn't the Chosen Undead turn Hollow and have to be killed by the next to link the flame?
Also, how come the Lords of Cinder aren't part of the Soul of Cinder? As in, how come they linked the flame and didn't go Hollow or become part of the Soul but were able to reenter the world and sit on their thrones if they chose?
