I'm suprised how useless running away is

So, I'm playing Dks1 for the first time, I'm 5 hours in and SL 30, finally delving deep into The Catacombs. Coming from Dark Souls 3, I was surprised that I couldn't just blaze past starting area enemies on my way to places, they have massive jump targeting and you'll get caught every few seconds! I'm having a ball, just thought it was a funny change of pace :)
