DS Remastered two handing question

I was able to get the Black Knight Sword early (praise it) and was super stoked to use it but couldn't use it two handed even with 16 STR/18 DEX. Has anyone else experienced this?
Edit: At this point I'm well past the 20/18 requirement but it was just something I found odd and made me wonder if QLOC changed something during development.
