New player str/int build viable?

I started playing ds1 remaster recently and i was wondering if leveling up strength and intelligence is viable or not. I dont wanna waste a bunch of time playing and leveling a build where i cant use high level stuff from either of the categories. I dont need to use the very best of the best but i would still like to be able to use high tier stuff from both categories.
