Religious characters.

So from what I understand, the crusader, leper, and vestal are the religious characters. But what is confusing me is the Vestal's camping ability, sanctuary I think, where it says "self- if religious" is that just unnecessary text or are there quirks or items that can make characters lose/gain religion? There are some that sound like they might like obsessed with sainthood but I'm not sure.
