Though I'll add a humble brag here. She got an award for 3.5-4.0 GPA and also an award for creative writing. I didn't know the creative writing award was coming, so took me by surprise. She hasn't talked about any of her stories or anything all year. So I messaged the teacher and she told me how to access all the class files and I'm still going through them, but this one struck a chord with me.

The Worst-Best Day of School

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! My alarm went off, telling me it was time to wake up.

I got ready for school, and as I arrived and sat down at my desk, I found a note reading “You are responsible for teaching class today:” followed by the lesson plans, signed by my teacher. As I sat at the teacher’s desk and taught, an hour or two later, the announcer came on. As we lay in silence listening, we hear an automated voice say, “Code blue, this is not a drill.” I went to a corner like all the surrounding others, and we lay as silent as when we were listening to the announcement to say what we were hiding for.

After a short while, I heard heavy footsteps pounding near the door. As I heard, I remembered, I forgot to lock the door. I would get up to fix the unlocked door, but it was too late, as I heard the door opening.

I cringed into a more condensed space, knowing who the only person opening the door would be. This is bad… I thought to myself.

Moments later, as I had suspected, a tall person with a navy blue ski mask on, approached out of the doorway, onto the red and blue carpet that looked desaturated from the dimmer light.

The intruder spoke something I could not understand, for it being warped into sounding as nothing as I was from too far of a distance, but what I could make out was that we needed to go with the person. I heard some disagreeing mumbles sway through the small crowd.

I think I saw the intruder lift something, but that’s when more people entered the dark room. They turned on the lights, brightening the dark classroom we were in. The other people who entered the room looked like they were the police, and soon all the people in the classroom.

I came out of a fearful paralysis, and came out of the small space I pushed myself into, and left with the rest of the people in the classroom. As I walked out, I saw every other class evacuating as we did. “Is everyone alright?” One police officer asked. Everyone then said in a chorus-like tone that they were fine. When we had left, we all went into the gymnasium calmly. When I had arrived, I had seen that all classes were in a single-file line, the teachers shushing chatter now and then. I had a good feeling that they were going to check if everyone was okay, and my suspicions were true.

The teachers looked at their paper and looked at their students, making sure everyone was present and alright. I started doing the same, since I was the teacher for a day. After doing the call, I heard the dismissal bell at the end of the day. As I walked down the hall, I heard even more students discussing this

event, and what could’ve happened, or how horrified they were.

Once the other students and I went and packed up everything, I left the school and headed to the bus.

After I had left the school, I rode the bus to my home and lay down after the event and fell asleep.

At the end of the day, I knew what safety precautions to perform if it ever happened again, and what to do, so I could stay safe.
