Can I continue my save file without the new update?

I started my first play through a couple months ago. I think I am about 75% of the way through. Everything I've read says they recommend starting a new save file for the update, but I really don't want to. Is it possible to continue without downloading it? Has anyone done it? Or am I just being stupid and I should play with the update? Thanks
