What did people used to do before hair creams and mousses and stuff?

Post Body
Maybe a dumb question, but I don't really know anything about haircare lol. I don't use any products (besides shampoo and conditioner) myself. But I see all these routines where people are putting like 5 different things in their hair and it makes me wonder how people used to take care of their hair ages ago before these products existed. Did they just not have curls/waves as nice as people do today? Is it not possible to have hair like you see in so many posts nowadays without products?
