I wasn't sure whether to go with help or discussion for the flair, so apologies if I chose the wrong one. I read through the rules and the wiki, but there's an overwhelming amount of information, and I use a screen reader so some of it is inaccessible for me. I hope this isn't a question that was answered somewhere in there.
I'm totally blind, and so I don't have a great idea of what hairstyles look best with which types of hair. Typically I ask my mom for advice, but she isn't crazy about shorter hairstyles on me because she loves my hair when it's long, so sometimes I suspect she gives me biased answers based on that. She became very distraught when I wanted to shave my head and told me it would look terrible because my face is too round, as an example.
Recently I've been considering the idea of getting a pixie cut, and while I'm not committed to the idea yet, I want to know if it would even look good. My mom says no because, according to her, people with hair as curly as mine can't do haircuts like that without ending up with an afro, which isn't a bad thing but just isn't what I'm going for. She says it needs a little bit of length to help way it down so it doesn't get as poofy.
Some of my friends have said it is possible though, and one of them said she's done it with curly hair and it looked fine. When my mom saw that (it was a comment on Facebook), she told me that friend's hair is wavy rather than curly, so it would be easier for her. I've previously had my hair so that the sides and back were shaved and it was longer on top, and she was happy with that as a compromise between longer hair and a shaved head, and my curls weren't a problem then.
I have very springy spiral type curls, and my hair texture is pretty coarse, if that makes a difference. The curls can get pretty tight, but they loosen with the right products and as my hair grows longer. It's also very, very thick, which is part of the reason I don't love having it long. It tends to suffocate me, especially in summer. I like the aesthetic more than the reality. I can provide photos if necessary, but I wasn't sure if I needed to.
My question is simply whether y'all think it's possible to get a pixie cut with hair like this, and specifically whether it would look okay or whether the curls would get too out of control. Would it make a difference if I layered it? This was a suggestion I got instead of having it thinned a little. If you have references for people with very curly hair who have gotten this type of haircut, I would appreciate those too so I can tell them to my mom and she can look them up and see. And if you don't think it would work, I also want to know that. I'm just looking for some perspective outside of my mom's. Thank you in advance.
Edit: I'm happy to change the "afro" description as per the bot replies, that's just specifically what my mom said to me and I'm not sure what else to call what she was talking about. I don't think there's anything wrong with having one, and I don't think she does either, but she doesn't feel that it would look good on me. If anyone has suggestions for an alternative name for the hairstyle she wants me to avoid, I'll edit again and change it.
