Why does my curly hair look better when styling it after a rinse with no shampoo? (When hairspray or pomade was applied before the shower)

When I style my hair fresh out of the shower with pomade or spray it comes out meh.
But if I take another shower that evening and just rinse out the pomade or spray and style it after drying with a towel, it comes out great. Why is this? Should I sleep with hairspray/pomade so I can just rinse in the morning and have my hair look great? What’s going in here?
