Should I trim my hair

So i got a haircut (taper fade) recently and I like the cut but the stylist left my actual hair too long. I have curly hair so it’s hard to tell the length sometimes.
Is it possible for me to trim it myself at home since i have up to 3 inch guards for clippers.
Is this a bad idea? i was just gonna pick my hair out with a pick and cut half an inch off.
