When did the SG 553 become an accepted weapon to use?

I'm all for more weapons being used besides the M4 and AK but I took a long break from the game and before I did anyone that would use the SG would get shunned for using it. Now when I hop into a game and watch YouTube highlights its everywhere. Did something change about it?
