Advice on returning to my previous employer

Post Body

Context: I worked for a FTSE100 firm in their tech department and left after a few years. When I left, one of the tech directors sent me a message on LinkedIn along the lines of “Please let me know if you ever want to come back. We would love to have you.” I’ve been at a different company for nearly a year however I’m not enjoying it e.g. the culture is completely different. I’m thinking of rejoining my previous company.

I don’t know whether the director was just being polite. Do you think I should apply via. HR or contact the director and if the director, any hints/tips on what to write? Should I explain why I’d be interested in going back or not? I don’t want to sound desperate.
