I have an offer from a small startup (10-15 people). I'm wondering if I should ask for a 1-year fixed contract or a permanent position. I've heard that if you get a 1 year contract, they won't terminate the contract within 1 year unless you do something insanely stupid.
I need to work for 1 year, minimizing any possibility of getting fired. I want to move to Canada and one of their requirements is to have 'continuous' work experience of atleast 1 year. This means lasting at a job for 1 year without getting terminated.
On the other hand, a permanent position will have a 6 month probation period during which they can fire you without citing any reason. After you pass the probation period, it is very difficult to get fired UNLESS it is a small startup (<20 employees). Small startups don't face the same difficulties as large companies when firing, they can fire easily even after the probation period as they are immune to certain laws. (speaking from Germany)
Therefore, my postulation is that a contract would be safer for job security compared to a permanent job offer at a small startup. Would you agree?
I only care about lasting 1 year at the company. I don't care if they don't extend my contract after 1 year. I just want 1 year continuous work experience. I don't want to get fired within 1 year under any circumstances.
