When did 'Solutions Architect' become a synonym for 'Sales Engineer'?

I was under the impression that a Solutions Architect was basically one rank above Software Architect, and essentially was responsible for the interconnected workings of multiple projects. But it seems like every Solutions Architect I meet is essentially in a sales position. What gives?
