I am a first year student in a program specializing in software development with a minor in computer science.
I have been applying to multiple places for internships, and the call I got for an interview that looks most promising is one company that does GIS work.
I have never done GIS. I have never touched CAD. I have a roommate in a GIS program and I have tried helping him with his labs before, but overall I know little to none about GIS. I am a programmer, not a GIS student.
I really want this job. It is back where I am from close to my parents house, meaning as a poor student I would be living rent free while I did the internship, which is absolutely perfect. My father knows one of the two owners, and that owner told me to apply since they are looking, so I do have an "in", but I am still not confident (since it's GIS work, not standard programming)
My question is, what should I learn to prepare myself? I know algorithms, data structures and problem solving questions are key for normal computer science/software development jobs interviews, but I have no clue what differs in GIS. To me it just seems like this monster of an overly technical and specific trade in the computer science realm.
What should I learn to prepare myself for the interviews? What kind of questions would a GIS intern be asked that would differ from a standard software dev intern? and am I over thinking GIS and assuming it's worse then it is?
It's just the unknown to me, as I do not know GIS software or all the differences between it and general development as far as programming goes.
EDIT: To clarify, the company makes GIS software for the foresting industry in Canada. They do GIS work and their website talks about GIS, however, they make the software. So it's a mix of both worlds.
