Considering this market, should I pursue a second BS in CS given my current STEM degree?
Post Body

Hello everyone,

I hold a BS in Physics from a T50 university and work in a non-SD/IT engineering role. I'm planning a career shift into software engineering, most likely full-stack web development, and seek advice. Given the changes occurring in this brutal market and sheer impossibility of self-teaching, is obtaining a second BS in CS a wise choice?

Assuming I do this, I have a couple follow-up questions:

  • Should I pursue the degree now or wait sometime for a better job market ? The degree would only take ~2 years to complete so I would be applying for jobs somewhat soon and (maybe) internships even sooner.
  • How crucial is an internship after graduation? I work full-time and quitting about a year into the CS degree for an internship seems risky (yet I'm willing to do so if necessary).

Side notes:

  • A master’s isn’t an option since I never really took any CS courses throughout my Physics BS.
  • I don’t plan on entering a career that combines both Physics and CS since those kinds of jobs typically require an engineering degree.
  • The program I am eyeing is through OSU online.
  • My BS in Physics was mostly covered by financial aid so my current loan amount is pretty low.
  • My SWE friends all suggest this route.
  • I currently make $72k a year, yet the job is rather dead-end with no room for promotion. That said, I'm in no immediate rush to leave; it's still a nice job.
  • I'm not in this for the money, I just really enjoy CS and software development.

Thanks in advance :)
