I'm working a fully remote job as a Software Engineer for a company based in the US, but which also has a branch in Toronto, which is were I live at the moment. In a couple of years, I am planning to permanently move back to my home country. However when I move, I want to be able to keep my current remote position and make the same money I would make if I stayed here. Does this sound like a good plan or is it legally not feasible? Would I be able to continue progressing in my career if I changed locations?
Edit: It seems this post is giving the impression that Im planning on doing this without discussing with my employer first. That isnt the case, I plan on being fully honest before I make any decisions. Im actually asking here to find out if it is outright illegal for everyone to do before I ask my manager about it at all. Im also interested in seeing if there are people out there that has done this and what their experience has been like.
Edit 2: Thanks for all the responses everyone! I'd like to add some notes to get some more thoughts on this. When I say move back home, I don't intend to completely move out of the US / Canada. I would still have an address and a bank account here. I would still pay taxes here and receive my payments here just as I am doing now. I only plan on moving physically to a different country but everything else stays the same. Does that make a difference in your opinion regarding the tax laws my company would have to abide by? Thanks again for such great responses!!
