I have to email my professor a paragraph about what I want to do for an “independent study” on and I don’t really know what that means

There’s no real description of what an independent study is in the course catalogue so I guess the title is supposed to be self explanatory. The topics I can choose from are networking, parallel programming, and software testing. Has anyone had experience with a similar “course?” How do I find a subtopic that would be worthy of this? Thanks
