How do I make my vassals give my player heir their land? (I'm new to the game)

I had 7 realms, 5 was the maximum I could have, and then I gave the other two to my brother, which caused him to be my vassal. Once I died, and my son took over, he got the 5 I had, but the two owned by my brother were his, and it ended up being classified as a independent country. I ended up going to war with him that lasted 5 years, only to get the titles, and see that my grandson wouldn't get the titles too, because after I gave the lands to a new vassal, my grandson was not on the line of succession. Is there a way to fix this?
