The OA Rose Window Ideas?

I'm a big fan of the show the OA and I'm wanting to make a blanket of the rose window. I found a really excellent pattern to try and adapt. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cathedral-rose-window-afghan

But it's the outside of it thats got me stumped. The smaller circles around the edges. I've been searching Ravelry for patterns with similar techniques to adapt.

I've been crocheting for a while but mostly stuffies and hats. I've only recently branched out into blankets, mandalas, shawls and using charts.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
