Advice for a beginner branching out from basic patterns/objects?

Post Body

So I've been doing the basic patterns used for crochet for a couple months (most advanced thing I've done is in previous post) but I want to try and challenge myself with new patterns or more advanced objects.

I've made a handful of amigurumi items so far and I think they went decently. But I was wondering whether you guys had and tips/advice as to how to challenge myself without taking too much of a step towards advanced techniques.

I'm not really interested in making clothing items though which is the issue as I seem to find those a lot. I like making these novel items, so is there a way to branch out and remain vaguely in this field of product interest? (Although tips outside of this are also appreciated)

Tl;dr: How do I challenge myself without going too advanced too early whilst also avoiding making clothing?

Thank you for any help you can give!
