Today I received a used blu-ray copy of Le Cercle Rouge. However, when I attempted to watch it on my PS3, the disc didn't play and it showed an error code which upon googling reveals very little. Most people say it's either a problem with a defective disc, or a defective player. I attempted to play other blu-rays/Criterions and they work fine, so I know it's not the player.
On about my 8th attempt at playing the film, this time by pressing Triangle on the disc and selecting "Play from the Beginning," the film started up and I was brought to the main menu. However, unlike every other Criterion I have, there is no background image on the menu, it's simply all black. Can anyone who has a copy of the film confirm that this is actually what the menu looks like? I tried playing some of the supplements and the movie itself, and they seemed to work fine. However, when I restarted the PS3 and tried playing it again, I received the same error code.
Is this (probably) just a semi-defective disc? Is the menu supposed to be all black, or is that a symptom of the defect?
