The Bad News Bears, Heaven Can Wait, and Breaking Away
Post Body

It's now more than forty years since these movies have been released and I believe that they hold enough cultural and aesthetic significance for them to be reappraised as fine examples of movies as art beyond their reputations as populist, commercial American cinema. Maybe the two reputations can be combined into a larger statement. All the same, they could use an update with a little "C" in their corners and a number on their spines.

Yes, Bears was recently given attention by Imprint, but that edition is now unavailable and could use a stateside restock. Heaven is the least likely considering the relationship between the big C and Paramount, but it would make an especially nice footnote to the eventual releases of Elaine May's other, earlier films. Breaking Away is perhaps the one needed the most. Aside from a limited Twilight Time release, it's not seen a blu release. And that was very nearly ten years ago.
