Simplicity Fall 2024

Simplicity (quietly, but more on that later) released their fall 2024 collection.

I so wanted to be excited ( witch 👏 hat 👏 variations 👏) but honestly, it's so overwhelmingly meh.

Assorted thoughts:

  • I like the lines of the vintage patterns and might grab them if I don't have anything comparable in my stash

  • I'm baffled by the envelope for S3006. I know too-long pants are a style, but that drawing makes it look like it should be its own, different silhouette to me.

  • Also of note: the "standard hem" variation photographed is supposedly the same length, per the finished measurements. If it's all dependent on length, regardless, I don't understand the line art.

  • Also-also: I'm amused they include shoes in the lineart for reference.

  • Are we wintering in Aspen? Why is this "fall"?

  • I think this apron counts as assless chaps.

As usual, their website is a Nightmare and there's no indication of a new release unless you go into the Simplicity-brand section. Why would there be?

I actually think that jumpsuit is super cute but I’m in 100% agreement that it makes no sense outside of winter wear. It looks like it would be super cozy in softshell for winter outdoor chores. It would be like lounging in a sleeping bag if you made it from sweatshirt fleece, and that ain’t a bad thing either.

Up here in northern Canada it’s a pretty stark difference between fall and winter wear, granted we only get a few weeks of fall per year. But we’re usually clinging to the last of the somewhat warm weather and enjoying things like light layers, shackets, those trendy fedora style hats, etc. And then the snow sets in and you see nothing but parkas and toques for the next 6 months. This jumpsuit to me says stick some warm under layers on underneath and/or some bibs and a parka overtop and go sledding lol.

Hard agree on the fabric suggestions though. Always been my pet peeve on patterns, when the recommendations are hard to find/read or vague. This is definitely the type of pattern that needs the right fabric to make it work well (it’s definitely made for knits but you know it’ll probably look terrible in anything but a thick fairly stable knit), so not listing the fabric requirements in an easy to read format is a major faux pas on Simplicity’s part. Give me a clear guide for how much stretch is appropriate. Listing Jersey next to ponte and sweatshirt fleece is just confusing because most jersey is significantly lighter and stretchier than those fabrics.

That’s the vibe, exactly haha I feel like it would look fabulous in a neon 90s-reminiscent colorblock too
