Why is the rez in the stem sometimes a dark, sort of grey color? Is that an indicator that it's low quality?

I feel like there has to be a connection. I notice whenever I see grey rez, it's usually not very good gear. So does anyone know if grey rez is an indicator that there is a certain cut? Or that there's too much bake? Or not enough? I'm curious, hopefully someone has some knowledge.
