Is there a correct way to smoke

I've been smoking for bout a year now but I was snorting for like 16 yrs but I feel I'm getting high when I hit it my way and how big a piece I hit cause I have to take monster hits to get high but my wife will hit crums and be high after every hit .... But neways she says when I hit stem I hold it too long on the shit but too me I feel it's the only way I get smoke and it gets me high... I've seen that video but it doesn't make sense too me ..... what kind of lighter do I need to use
