I work in sales at a car dealership. Last week I got a new coworker, I’m realizing he might be socially maladroit.
I asked him for his phone number this morning in case I need to call or text him about work, it’s something most of us do just in case we need to tell each other something. His desk is right by mine, after all. He seemed confused why I’d ask for that, I said I’d only contact him for work reason. I handed him my phone and he entered his first/last name and phone number.
I texted him my name and it turns out he gave me a random phone number. I can’t help but be put off by this, it’s a weird thing to do given that I made it clear I don’t intend to text or call him for any reason besides work.
The only relevant context I can think of is that I’m gay, but I have mentioned to him once or twice in passing that I have a boyfriend. I’d think it’s obvious I’m not going to hit on him.
What do I even say to him about this?
If the company doesn’t pay my cell phone bill, you don’t get my number.
