Hey all!
I have never done couch-surfing. I feel I would not be comfortable doing so never tried atleast in India and south asian countries where I could afford a hostel.
But I am planning to go to Singapore and given that the stays are expensive, I am planning to look into couch-surfing this time.
Would really appreciate some tips to keep in mind because I would hate to mess it up for lack of awareness.
From my perspective you are missing the point of couchsurfing - especially if you don't feel comfortable with it if you can afford other accommodation.
Couchsurfing is all about trust and wanting to meet and stay with people to learn about their culture and life while staying and traveling, not about having a free place to sleep. You should have something to share with the host such as your culture, a meal, a drink or time and in return they will share with you a place to stay.
You will find if you send requests asking to stay for free accommodation and no mention of what you will offer the host from hosting you, you probably won't have much success.
