Is it worth the $20 verification?

I am thinking about using the Couchsurfing app to travel to LA for a couple nights (Nov 11-13) so I made my profile and submitted my request. Is it worth the $20 to be verified? Are my chances of being accepted greatly increased? I'm fine with paying for a hotel, but I would also be down to save the money to couch surf.
