New to Couchsurfing, what can I expect and what's expected of me?
Post Body

I haven't couchsurfed or hosted before and I just made an account. I've been doing a bit of research about it but I wanted to ask how it generally works, what I can expect and what's expected of me? Should I expect the host to share dinner with me, or should I organise my own food?

I'm pretty sure the idea is to hang out with them; is that all the time while I'm there, just the evenings, or just when they're free?

Obviously I'm guessing I'd be expected to clean up after myself, respect their house, etc.

Why do people host? Is it just for the company?

Comments

For me, I host couchsurfers as have space to and want to meet different people and learn about their culture and lifestyle and share mine. So for a surfer to stay expect will be someone who wants to get to know each other and hopefully share a meal or a few drinks but for them to be self sufficient so can do their own sightseeing or going out as needed but if we are both free can get to the beach or show them so local walks and sights.

With food, i will generally offer one meal but then most surfers will do the same if they will be home and once they get settled - should be a shared experience as it would be if you had a friend to come and stay from you.

So its pretty different from a paying bnb guest who usually just is after a place to sleep.
