I am looking for advice on buying property in CR. Please read below for context:
I have been looking for an apartment or condo in Costa Rica for well over a year now. I am a single, queer and sterilized millenial, meaning, I am not looking to start a family myself, but also, I am not fond of the "family lifestyle" so I am not looking to spend my entire life savings on being surrounded by parents and their children.
Initially, I was very appealed at the concept of of a studio or 1-bd apartment buildings in the SJ surrounding area, mainly because of their amenities (gym, pool, theater, security, views, etc) BUT upon visiting a handful of these, I noticed they all have children playgrounds (or even kids pool!). Real state agents are telling me that in CR, by LAW all new developments MUST have one, in order to comply with some sort law protecting children. Is this true?
I even booked a visit with an agent that assured me their building didn't have children, and when I got there, there was a kids party at the common hall with clowns and full blast reggaeton. Lol.
Then I was told to look around University of Costa Rica, as the area is targeted to students. Although I am not opposed to being surrounded by young adults, even though I am no longer as young myself, I truly did not like the area for many reasons. I just don't feel like it's the best bang for your buck.
I was also told that by law, landlords cannot reject children, so if someone buys an apartment at one of this mostly-adult building, but then they rent it out and the person who rented has children while living there, that the renter gets to live there for as long as they want. Is this true?
Also, I know this one is going to be shocking but I do not want to live near a beach. I am looking for a place max 1 or 2 hours out of San Jose. Since I am a single person, for security reasons, I don't feel comfortable living in a house or a place that doesn't have security. I have backpacked my entire adult life and have learned I feel more comfortable in small and non visually crowded spaces, so I do not see myself living in a house either.
I know there are probably laws protecting against discrimination based on family situation, and my post if not meant to offend anyone. I am just trying to find a place where my lifestyle fits.
TLDR; Are there any residential developments targeted to childfree people in Costa Rica? Can no-children policies even be enforced to home owners in Costa Rica?
