was there ever a reason given as to why Pat Phelan was so messed up?

I was just thinking about this randomly earlier and I can't really remember was there anything ever mentioned about his past? that could have potentially explained why he became the person he was?

as even before he became a serial killer he was still a pretty messed up psycho who enjoyed tormenting people so you can't say he just became this way due to the circumstances of getting himself embroiled in all these murders and whatnot.

so was there ever any sort of explanation or anything as to why he turned out so bad?
