Buttery Toast?

Post Body
So, I enjoy a spot of toast now and then. Mainly white bread, if that matters. Here's the thing though, I like my butter thick and my toast warm and getting those two things to coincide has been rather tricky, with the butter often melting.
I was wondering if there's any trick to getting the best of both worlds? An ideal time to leave the toast sitting, a specific type or amount of butter to use some secret mystical sects special buttering technique?
I figured there's no harm in asking.
EDIT: It may be worth noting I live in Ireland; it's more common to see tubs of butter here than butter sticks.
