Completely brand new. I couldn't find any faq so I don't know if this has been asked before.
I just started like a few minutes in. I don't understand anything going on. Like at all. I found some documents. I have no clue about basic setting/exposition - such as in typical stories. There's not much around. I went upstairs. The music and lighting/ambience makes it scary. So I stopped before going too much further in. I don't really know what I'm getting into. Am I missing something? I own Alan Wake 1 (got free on Epic as well), but haven't played it yet. Should I play that first? Or is this some kind of mysterious story that will unfold as I play? Thanks!
Hey, OP! I get what you are feeling! It is a weird sci-fi like genre. It focus on the fear of the unknown. Concepts that are too gloomy for the human brain to comprehend. Honestly, I felt extremely anxious on my first playthrough, cause it made me think a lot! Brain-twisting kind of thoughts. I actually stopped right before the ending cause I couldnât take it. (Worth mentioning that I have a very sensitive anxiety lol So I always get anxious with these cerebral stories.)
But I usually find it worth trying, beyond my anxiety, because the stories are AWESOME! These kinds of weirdness are way more scary to me than ghost movies, for example. Because they leave you without answers (or direct ones, at least). Control is a game for you to play 2x, 3x and you will always find hidden clues on every playthrough.
So, keep in mind that the kind of fear you are going to get is of the unknown. Of the âslightly familiar but with a weird twist that I just canât describeâ vibe. If you love storytelling, I would recommend you keep going! You will have a hell of a time. It is very creative and thought provoking. (If that is the kind of story you like, of course.)
So, I would define it as a weirded out feeling, more than fear. Remember that you will have to read A LOT in order to understand the details that happen inside the Oldest House. It is required so you can understand the burocracy that happens on this place. You will also find funny cases, weird missions, comic characters and all that. You will end up with tons of unanswered questions that maybe Remedy will never answer.
So, to sum things up. Go for it, little by little if you feel itâs too much. Play Control and the DLCs, than play Alan Wake I and Alan Wake II. That was the order I played and it worked fine. Also, consider replaying all of them at least once, since you will get a lot of details that you will not on your first playthrough. Have fun!
Sorry for the long text, I just love seeing that Iâm not the only one that gets scared with these games.
