Here's a small, relatively minor corporate conspiracy for ya'll that I noticed recently.
Citibank ATM's are the only machines I have ever used that don't allow you to withdraw your debit card until after the cash is dispensed. This makes it far more likely that people will forget their card in the machine – which I did the other day. I returned to the bank after the Fourth of July holiday weekend and were told that yes, my card had been turned in there – but that they shred all found cards at the end of each day for "security" (it's a fucking bank for God's sake!). Of course, they will happily replace your card – for a fee.
I theorize that this is an intentional design / policy decision to extract additional fees from customers.
Do you have any examples of other corporate practices designed to extract money from people that you've noticed?
