How safe do you think it is buying a second hand console?

In this case, a wiiu. They're quite expensive new but there are a few cheap second hand ones on eBay and gumtree. First one in looking at was bought when they came out, but wasn't used for a couple years as they went overseas. Second is 14 months old, bought new. Little use. I'm worried it will break after a month, because then I've wasted my money on something I cant return. Is it almost always a bad idea, or generally okay?
