Thanks to /u/ysadamsson's Logogenesis game, /u/Behemoth4 and I have been developing a yet unnamed conlang through a conversation in the language (1 2 3 4). This is the first attempt to document the language in any coherent way (insofar as I understand it) so that more people can join. It is by no means final. You're also welcome to join!
Introduction
The phonology is this: /i e a o u y t k s z r Å‹/. You can type /Å‹/ as /n/, but I'll pretend you have a foreign accent.
The grammar is a little unusual (which honestly stems from my stilted gloss of the phrase /kzuy ti rask ur oŋ/ at the start), but it makes it feel more natural.
Word order: SVO, with VOS for questions. S, V, and O can be dropped if they can be inferred, with V generally defaulting to /ŋe/ (be). Adjectives precede nouns, and adverbs…go wherever they want I guess. I'm not really sure if there's a difference between adjectives and adverbs here yet, so I'll just refer to them with A.
Conjunctions: /ur/ is "of" or "from" and is left-associative. /a/ is "and" or "but" depending on usage.
Plurals: Reduplication (saying a word twice) indicates plural, which includes dual. This counts as a single word.
Pronouns:
Person | Singular | Plural |
---|---|---|
1st | iŋ | iŋiŋ |
2nd | oŋ | oŋoŋ |
3rd | aŋ | aŋaŋ |
There are also /ti/ (this) and /a/ (that).
Vocabulary
IPA | Meaning | Notes | |
---|---|---|---|
atsa | A | true | |
ayt | A | or something | Notably, this has just been used once, after a noun, so I'm not sure how it would work in general. |
esre | N | color | |
eze | sorry | ||
ket | V | come | |
kza | N | heat | |
kzu | A | small | |
raza | N | plant | |
razk | N | farm | |
satsa | V | add | |
ske | V | not know | If you're wondering why that seems backward, it used to mean "forget". |
surzu | V | tend/care for | |
suzre | N | house | |
ter | V | see/look | |
tya | A | often | |
zukzer | V | criticize | |
zur | V | have | |
Å‹aei | please | ||
Å‹e | V | is | |
Å‹yt | N | someone |
Synthesis
The language already has quite an inventory of suffixes that can be added to pretty much any word to augment its meaning and possibly its lexical class.
IPA | Meaning | Notes |
---|---|---|
-i | not | |
-ksi | amount | |
-sai | volitional | It can also apply to nouns, such as resai "let's go to" |
-tu | comparative | |
-tzi | change (to) | It can produce a noun or a verb. |
-y | very | |
-zo | future | |
-zoi | now | |
-Å‹a | present? | I originally glossed it as progressive aspect, but it ended up more like present tense. |
-Å‹i | past |
There are also two morphemes, /re/ (place) and /ze/ (possible) which can function on their own or act as suffixes. It will be interesting to see if this results in a shift to a more uniform synthetic system by extrapolation, or if they are simply special cases.
Interrogatives: /yt/ means "what", and it can be combined with suffixes to form other interrogatives, such as /ytre/ (where), /ytksi/ (how much), and such, acting more like a prefix.
Here's a word: /razayrazayreitzisai/. It means "please deforest". It breaks down as raza-y-raza-y-re-i-tzi-sai
.
If you want to join, just comment here with the IPA and translation of what you said, and gloss things that are new or unclear. It doesn't matter if it's fictional (see the conversation). This is really a fun way to make a language, and in the words of /u/ysadamsson: WE'RE ALL CREATORS!
