What is your most confusing construction?
Post Body

A construction is a way to place words together to create a meaning that translates differently than what you'd expect. Let's take a look at my genitive absolute.

Stolen derived from Latin’s Ablative absolute, this clause comes before the main clause. It contains the genitive followed by a participle, such as kana kiƂu, which together, to the untrained eye, mean “his killed.” But that makes no sense! Instead, try translating it “with him having been killed.” Ah, now it’s all falling into place.

Kana kiƂu, li limahanaƂ ua pui ana tre huhu.

"With him having been killed, the laborers were very angry.

When it’s a present active participle, like kana kiƂanti, translate it as “while he is/was killing.”

Kana kiƂanti lu haku, io kumebo lum orum.

"While he kills the owner, I will take the gold."

Make sure that him doing the killing is taking place at the same time as the main verb—if the main clause’s verb is present, make sure that you translate this kind of genitive absolute as present.

Kana kiƂanti lu haku, io ua kume lum orum.

"While he was killing the owner, I took the gold."
