Small Conlanging Toolkit
Post Body
Here's a little bit of a thing I made, it's mostly links to help a new conlanger get started and is by no means the best stuff there is. If I missed anything or you have good alternatives to the stuff in here, please let me know!
- IPA Typer--incredibly useful for when you're trying to write down the phonological inventory of a language.
- Freecompose(windows)--Much like the IPA typer above, except much faster and streamlined into normal typing. The only drawbacks are that it's a Window's only program (I think) and that you have to create shortcuts for any characters not in the default set (from personal experience, it's quite a few). If anybody not using a PC wants this kind of thing, try looking around for a compose key program.
- Microsoft Excel (2010)--This is a spreadsheet program you can get with just about any version of Microsoft Office. It makes adding new vocabulary words and definitions, along with any other information you want to include about words, an absolute breeze.
- Google Drive's Spreadsheets--Although this isn't as powerful as Excel, it's definitely simpler, more lightweight, and, best of all, free! It's also convenient if you have multiple devices, as it stores everything online.
- Zompist Word Generator--Designed with conlanging in mind, this lightweight, powerful program can generate all the words you need for a conlang's dictionary. One drawback, however, is that it is a bit complicated to learn how to use--when you do, however, there's no stopping you!
- Zompist Sound Change Applier--Another tool from Zompist designed with conlanging in mind. Although even trickier to learn than its word generating sister, it can be used to take words from any language and convert them into words that fit your language's phonological rules, and even artificially evolve your language.
- Google Drive's Slideshows--This is for when your language is complete and you want to get it into a nice, easy-to-swallow format for your learners. Like GD's Spreadsheets, it's visible to anybody you want it to be visible to, so you can easily distribute lessons to people anywhere.
- FieldWorks Language Explorer(FLEx)-- A complicated, but very powerful tool you can use to not only enter definitions, but also connotations and more to your dictionary.
- Symbolchooser--Has a free and normal version that's $12.99. A word processor designed for conlangs in which you can create your own symbols on the fly and assign them to keys. I've only played around with this a little bit, and I'm not sure what the paid version adds.
- Translation Practice--Sentences and stories you can translate to hone your speaking skills and add vocabulary to your conlang.
