TLDR: Words and sentences in my conlang are normally longer than in many other languages. Is this an issue or not? If so, what can I do preferably without making shorter roots?
Hello, so I'm rather new to conlanging and there is a recurring problem I've been facing: I design morphemes based mostly on the aesthetic feel, but when I put them together, words and sentences come out way longer than in English and not-so-much longer than in some other languages. I know that Japanese has a very high syllable per morpheme ratio, so I've tried comparing my language with it (I've used machine translation mostly) - and it barely succeeds at not overcoming the "threshold"! I'm afraid that as the language expands, it might as well fail soon. Have anyone encountered this problem as well? And is this even worth worrying about? Note that the conlang I'm making is non-naturalistic.
EXAMPLES (this is not necessary for understanding - skip it if you want):
- "Xfe mesto lonnam ust keruno umem mas" - I saw how you hit that tree.
gloss: {me.PAST see how-PAST.ACC you hit-SUBORD_CLAUSE tree-PAST.ACC that}
In my conlang the sentence has 12 syllables, in English - just 7, in Ukrainian (my native language) - 12.
- "Xfe lovvo meli vehoβl moumi mis" - Yesterday I ate the tree's leaf.
gloss: {me-PAST back-day eat leaf-CONSTRUCT the.FEM-tree OBJ_PAST}
Conlang: 11, English: 8, Ukrainian: 9
Edit: changed personal gloss notation to the commonly accepted one
