I will split this into tow section. 1: the short version and 2: the long version
1: I am making a family of languages that use tone. I read a previous post here on how to get tones. There are two problems I am facing. Voicless sonorants are the first, because I do not really know how to get them (both allophonic and phonemic). The second is representation. To oversimplfy I use the same system represent phonemes in every language I make and it really does not care for looks because it needs to be functional. I am mostly thinking about just using straight up numbers for that.
2: I am making a relativly big language family with most of its members developing tone. The ancestor did not have it, but the three main branches develope it independently. I would like to have as many tones as possible in the beginning and have where which tones is very as much as possible (at least when first developed). I have read the guide on tonogenisis that was posted here a while ago and it said I can use voiceless sonorants for that. Now here I run into my first problem which is I have no idea how to get them. If someone could point me into the right direction that would be very handy. The second problem is representing tones. I use the same system of representing phonemes accross all my languages. For example I use the same symbol for the voicless uvular stop in all languages that have it. It goes function over form and something the sound change applier can deal with. The best I could think of for now is using exponant number for that (though I am sure that is not the best system). If you have any ideas, please tell me.
Thank you all for reading and hopefully answering
