This happened in my mid-20s.(20 years ago). I was dating someone I knew for a few months. She was nice and all.
Her cousin turned 30 and his wife threw a birthday party. It was summer, so it was in the backyard. Awesome setup, lots of people.
Anyway, I needed to use the bathroom. So I went. #2. Average poop size. I don't know why, but clogged the toilet. I couldn't find the plunger.
I flushed it again and disguatong poop water overflowed onto the floor. I got the hell out of there. Went back outside. I wasn't drunk or stupid or anything. Just unlucky.
About 20 minutes pass by and the wife comes out FURIOUS SCREAMING "WHO DESTROYED MY BATHROOM!!!". she was livid. At that point some people had left (for unknown other reasons) so people speculated it was one of them. She was ranting and raving.
I felt awful and like a total scumbag. My gf was trying to calm her down.
The birthday boy found the plunger (in the other bathroom of the house), fixed it. A crew of people raided the paper towel rolls stash and did cleanup. 20 minutes later it was clean and done. Someone mopped and cleaned. The wife was happy.
The party went on.
The wife was determined to find out who did it. So much drama in the days and weeks after.
Eventually weeks later, it was forgotten.
Fast forward 3 or so months later. I was laying in bed with my gf who I went the party with.
We were doing "tell me a secret" game.
We started with sex secrets.
Then I told her I was the guy who clogged the toilet.
Holy shit. I should have kept that quiet.
She jumped out of bed, naked, and started screaming at me calling me a disgusting pig.
She said it caused friend/family drama because the wife accused others and arguments happened.
She told me to get dressed and get out (we were at her apartment). I apologized and apologized.
So I left. She told her cousin. He wanted "kick my ass". Because I didn't admit to it when it happened and didn't help cleanup.
She dumped me over this. I lost a nice girlfriend because I clogged a toilet.
Everything happens for a reason, 5 or so years later I met my wife, and she's nicer.
But yeah, I was a scumbag for not helping clean it up and hiding from it.
I even sent an apology card to the cousin and his wife with a restaurant gift card. They never replied.
