Soliciting the opinion of other techs - What is the actual use case for M.2?
Post Body

So this is evolving out of a discussion on a build I put together recently for someone I know who was all fired up to get some M.2 SSDs and build a computer around them.

I know them pretty well so we went back and forth a bit and, for me personally, I don't think M.2 is really at a point yet that justifies most people investing the extra in M.2 hardware unless you have a very specific need, mostly a space concern.

This person contends that M.2 is faster and therefore a performance upgrade. I'm not 100% up on the new trends in PC hardware but from where I sit, the speed gain is mostly in what you plug into these slots and while yes you can get a boost in performance, it's generally not something the average user is going to notice unless you go fuckin' ham on hardware to the tune of several thousand dollars.

What's your take on it?
